Strategies We Use-Please Try These At Home!
  • Whenever possible, have your children play games while laying on their tummies. "Tummy time" is important at any age! This position exercises the core muscles of the trunk necessary for good posture.

  • Pretend to be different animals and crawl on the floor like a crab (walking backwards on hands and feet), a snake (slither on forearms and belly), a frog (bend knees to squat and hop along floor with hands and feet). Animal walks exercise core muscles and prepare the hand muscles for future fine motor fun!

When completing table top activities, children work best when their feet touch the floor and both their knees and hips are at 90 degree angles. This ensures comfort and support!

Writing and coloring on a vertical or slanted surface promotes correct posture and crayon grasp. Try taping activities to an easel or refrigerator.

Have your child use small crayons when coloring. These are often easier for children to hold than long, chunky crayons. Notice the girl's grasp on the wide markers and then on the small crayons.
